Real-Life Examples: QR Code Implementation

by Divahound on June 13, 2011

Divahound recently flew the coop and headed over to England and the Netherlands. The trip was amazing in itself, but also a great learning experience as we saw several great implementations of QR codes in Bath, London and Amsterdam.

First up, just outside the train station in Bath.

First Great Western created QR codes for their train schedules and timetables and posted them all in a convenient-to-scan poster. Need to know when the next train leaves bound for London? Just scan the QR code and you’re all set!

Once we made it to London (yes, thanks to scanning the First Great Western poster to find out when to grab the next train) we found QR codes at the TKTS booth in Leicester Square.

In this case, the top QR code takes the scanner to the Leicester Square TKTS booth fan page on Facebook and the bottom code takes the smartphone user to their Twitter page. Once scanned, the user is then able to follow TKTS on both Facebook and Twitter and stay abreast of all the show tickets available on a daily basis at the booth. Genius.

We encountered another QR code in London, this one just outside the Tower Hill station of the Underground. We were waiting for a walking tour to begin and grabbed a local paper to keep us occupied. Inside, we found a full-page advertisement for The co-operative. This ad touted Aberdeen Angus burgers and made us so hungry that we couldn’t help but scan the QR code.

On to Amsterdam! We so enjoyed walking around aimlessly, just exploring the city and canals on foot (and dodging the ever-present bicyclists).

One of our treks took us across this great example of guerrilla marketing; we walked right by it before my brain registered what it was. Of course, we had to double back and check it out!

Most curious, I scanned the code. It took me to the Facebook fan page for Cava Codorniu, where I could then enter to win a trip for four to Spain.

These are just some of the real-life examples of QR code implementation we found in our travels. Let us know if you’ve come across any! Want more ideas for implementing QR codes in your small business? Contact Divahound today and we’ll show you how!

Very informative & fun post!

I have often wondered if QR codes are practical in this current day (no-doubt they are the future lol), so it was really great to see real-life examples of QR Codes being used.

Fun post & writing style! :)

I’ve been seeing QR codes everywhere! Even had them all over my company’s international convention. Only problem is, I don’t have a mobile device that can read them. I happen to live in an area with no cell service at all ( OMG, is that possible?) and thus don’t have the use for a mobile…sorry state of affairs, yes?

Hi Robin, that is indeed a sorry state of affairs! Hopefully you’ll get cell service soon in your area.
